Having cancer is rough, but my mommy and daddy are making sure
I get the best treatment options possible. I have to see a new doctor
now, a veterinary oncologist, Dr. K, and she is helping me with
chemotherapy. I am getting the Madison-Wisconsin chemotherapy plan. I
started my first treatment this past Saturday, and I did pretty well.
My
mommy has been reading about nutrition and diseases for a while now, so
she wants to put me on a special diet. She has been reading away about
doggie cancer, and is trying to figure out the best diet plan and
supplements for me. Hopefully it is tasty because these steroids I have
to take sure make me hungry!

Dr. K called my mommy this morning. She said that Dr. W had called her and told her how great I looked and how well I was doing. She sounded really happy to hear that. Dr. K said they got the results of my biopsy back and it did in fact show that I have high-grade large cell lymphoma. My mommy took a deep breath, because she still wished that I had somehow been misdiagnosed. Dr. K asked if my mommy had any questions, and in typical-mommy fashion, my mommy did. My mommy has been researching doggie cancer since my diagnosis, and has also looked at alternative treatments, so she asked Dr. K about a pill called Apocaps. Apocaps are a pill designed by a veterinarian specifically for dog cancer that are supposed to cause apoptosis, AKA cell suicide. Cancer turns apoptosis off in the body, which is one of the reasons why it spreads so efficiently. Bet you didn't think a dog could know all that, but I am one smart puppy! Dr. K said she had heard of Apocaps, but did not know how effective it was. My mommy asked if it would harm me and Dr. K said she was pretty confident that it wouldn't. She advised my mommy to be cautious about any supplements, since the binding ingredients can pose just as big of a risk as the active ingredients, and my mommy understood. I think my mommy is going to try them out though; she will try anything to make my prognosis better. My mommy also asked about K9 Immunity, another supplement made from mushrooms. It is supposed to boost the immune system, but Dr. K advised her against that one. She again told my mommy that many of these plant-based products can interact with other medicines, so we wouldn't want to risk compromising my chemotherapy treatments. My mommy said okay, then asked about Fish Oil for Omega-3s. Dr. K said that was okay, which is good because I think fish oil tastes pretty yummy. Dr. K said that she would talk more about complementary treatments on Friday, when I go in for my next chemotherapy treatment.
